C O M M E R C I A L M O D U L A R C A R P E T
Scope
This specific guideline is applicable to Newspec commercial modular carpet including all yarn types with HexBac™ and ESC™ Elastic Backing options.
Introduction
Current publications of below standards are applicable and to be referred to in conjunction with guidelines set out in this literature.
- AS/NZS 2455.1:2007 Textile floor coverings - Installation practice Part 1: General
- AS/NZS 2455.2:2007 Textile floor coverings - Installation practice Part 2: Carpet Tiles
- ISO/PAS 18167:2014(en) Textile floor coverings - Installation practices - General
- CRI 104 Sept 2015 Standard for Installation of commercial carpet
The guidelines in this literature are to be followed should any discrepancy with above standards. Installation does not conform to instructions provided in this literature may result potential damage to product which can void warranty.
Contact Newspec or your local distributor for any uncertainty prior to installation.
Product Handling & Storage
Newspec modular carpet should be store and conditioned as in this instruction and recommendations and as per AS/NZS 2455.1:2007
When textile floor covering products are delivered to site, they should be stored on a flat, clean, dry surface, well-ventilated space and preferably suspended from the sub-floor.
When unloading, pallet should NOT be stacked over on product of another, excessive over stacking may result crushing, damage of product. It is recommended to unload boxes from each pallet within 48 hrs of delivery.
Product should NOT be stored or installed under severe condition or extreme ambition temperature. Preferred room temperature between 15°C and 25°C with a relative humidity ± 50 %.
Subfloor Preparation
All subfloor to be installed on should be prepared following this instruction and recommendations and as per AS/NZS 2455.1:2007
All subfloor surfaces shall be dry, smooth, plane, sound and clean. Subfloor with excessive porosity should be primed.
Subfloor temperature is preferably maintained between 15°C and 25°C at least 48 hrs before and after installation to ensure dimensional stability of installation due to movement might occur caused by expansion/shrinkage of subfloor materials.
Subfloor moisture level/relative humidity/dryness should not exceed 75% when tested as per AS/NZS 2455.1:2007. For specific requirement of adhesive and glue, refer to corresponding manufacturer guidelines.
Subfloor pH level of 6-9 are acceptable, use simple test such as pH paper with water bead on subfloor surface. Additionally, Refer to adhesive manufacturer’s specifications.
Installation – Square
Setting Up
Installation is preferably to start from the center of a room/area. To ensure center and aligned installation, utilize laser marker to establish points on subfloor or refer to procedures and diagram below in conjunction with AS/NZS 2455.2:2007.
To set up a grid or axis on subfloor using chalk and tape measurer:
1. Establish a line through A-B that is parallel to the longest wall of the area.
2. Find a point X on A-B which allows installation of not less than one-third of a carpet tile width at/against perimeter walls.
3. Locate points A, B that are 3 m on either side of point X.
4. To establish a line through X-K which is perpendicular to A-B, draw an arc with radius of 5 meters at points A, B which intersect at point K.
5. Draw line X-K which is perpendicular to line A-B.
Applying Adhesive
Adhesive can be applied on a grid & perimeter system or applied in full area on subfloor.
To applied a grid & perimeter system, refer to below diagram for area of application:
A minimum of 25 cm strip of adhesive should be applied along the grids and a full area of adhesive should be applied for Carpet tiles at/against perimeter walls.
Laying Tiles
Monolithic, Quarter Turn Installation. Starting from center point X, parallel to the longest wall of the area:
Brick Installation. Starting from center point X, diagonally to the longest wall of the area:
Installation – Plank
Setting Up
Construct coordinate system identically to square tile installation.
Applying Adhesive
For Brick Installation, refer to bellow plan diagram to apply adhesive with trowel in blue shaded area. Adhesive is recommended to apply in full for tiles at/against perimeters walls.
For Herringbone Installation, refer to bellow plan diagram to apply adhesive with trowel in blue shaded area.
Laying Tiles
Brick Installation, Herringbone Installation are recommended to commerce at center of the area, point X. Regularly check if line 1 and 2 are parallel to each other across the installed area to ensure uniform installation.
Brick Installation
Installation – Stairs
For installation on stairs, carpet tiles are to be cut and fit for tread and rise individually. Suitable stair nosing needs to be installed without bending carpet tile in any directions.
Installation – Perimeter Fitment
To cut and fit carpet tile precisely at/against perimeter wall, boundaries, follow recommend steps bellow:
1. Place the boundary piece to be cut under the adjacent piece 3 as shown.
2. Cut along the edge of piece 3,
3. Fit and place the cut piece 1. Discard waste piece 2.
Adhesive Recommendations
Adhesive should be water based or acrylic, pressure sensitive, non-permanent fix which allow carpet tiles to be lifted without damaging subfloor after a period of time of installation for replacement and maintenance purposes. In the case of primed subfloor, check compatibility between adhesive and primer.
